Beautiful Ben came in to our care end of January, due to the personal circumstances of his owner who had to move to an apartment following a relationship break up. He was very underweight, for his size & although he has been fed very nutritional food for the past 8 weeks while with us, he is still underweight at 29 kgs so will need further building up from his new owner.
Ben is a fabulous dog, when you get to know him and that takes time, but it is worth every minute you spend getting to know this exceptionally wonderful fellow. He does not like being " fussed over" by people he does not know. Once he knows & trusts you, he is your best friend for cuddles & affection. He sits, lies down when asked & gives the paw - Ben LOVES food & treats - they are the way to his heart.
Ben is very comfortable around women & very nervous of men, he barks at men. Though he lived in a home, since a pup, with a couple, I think he has possibly received harsh treatment from some man along the way. A female home would be great for Ben, but he is only 15months old and in the right home, with kind, confident & sensible owners, he would, given time, adjust to living where a man is present, though he may be generally nervous of all other unknown men.
He will need to get to know his new owner before he can go with them, spending time with him for a couple of visits is the best way. He is loving & intelligent, good with other dogs and cats, as the photos below from his original home show -
His beautiful coat will need regular grooming.
Whoever adopts Ben must be prepared to give him time to adjust and not swamp him with "fuss" until he has got to know & trust you you , then he is a cuddly bear. He loves playing with toys and large balls (boomer balls only as all others smaller balls that fit in a dog's mouth e.g. tennis balls can be dangerous to "ball driven " dogs).
He will need an understanding, confident & experienced GSD home, I was told by his owner that he is good with children, though he hasn't lived with children.
At the kennels he has been out playing with another GSD. He is a strong dog on the lead but is used to walking on a Halti.
Ben is a fabulous, affectionate & very loving, young dog for the right home - but please take on board the contents of this post.
Attached photos are from his former home.
